We are shocked by a paper published in the JME suggesting that the violence of FGM can be culturally explained away and permitted. FGM causes nothing but pain and harm to women and girls. There are no benefits at all. It prevents sexual pleasure and makes childbirth more dangerous than it already is. Ask the maternity staff and clinicians who pick up the pieces. All children have the right to go through puberty and arrive at the other side whole human beings.
